Dauphin County Bar Association Diversity Initiatives

Equal Professional Opportunity Committee (EPOC)

Promoting diversity in our Bar Association is not just a priority – it is a key element of our leadership culture and has become a core value of our organization. Our Equal Professional Opportunity Committee (EPOC) is the only bar association committee with its own budget and oversees the diversity and inclusion initiatives we advance at the DCBA.  The Committee also presents the Hon. Clarence C. Morrison Award for promoting diversity to a deserving entity each year at our Annual Membership Meeting.

In 2004, EPOC was instrumental in creating the Capital Area Managing Partners (CAMP) Diversity Initiative.  A number of local firms commit to support a minority 1L student with a stipend and placement in order to expose students to the practice of law and encourage them to consider Central PA to begin their legal career.  We partner with Lancaster Bar Association in this effort. The DCBA strives to promote diversity on its Board of Directors and in its nominations to the Pennsylvania Bar Association House of Delegates for Zone 3.

We partner with the Keystone Bar Association in hosting an annual Joint Dinner Meeting and provide the KBA with administrative support to assist in the accomplishment of their mission. Our ambitious pro bono program is also a useful tool in promoting diversity, and helps us demonstrate to the minority community that we are a relevant and useful resource to them.  We cannot realistically hope to reflect the racial composition of our local communities in our bar membership but we can reflect the responsiveness to community needs and a genuine commitment of service to all of our citizens.
